Advocacy Day at State Capitol on April 2, 2008

Wednesday April 2, 2008
9:00-10:30am
State Capitol

In an effort to keep children on the radar screen of Legislators, and to fulfill our philosophy of empowering parents to be advocates for education on behalf of their children ‘Eleu, a collaboration of Native Hawaiian early childhood agencies, including Alu Like, INPEACE, Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Centers, Na Kamalei, Partners in Development Foundation and Punana Leo, came up with an idea to have an Advocacy Day at the State Capitol on Wednesday April 2nd.

As a result of more than 2 months of planning by all the participating agencies, ‘Eleu will have 400 children and parents at the Capitol participating in a Family Child Interaction Learning (FCIL) Day from 9:30-10:30am at street level in the rotunda. The morning will highlight strengthening families and show the importance of FCIL, and the communities these programs reside in.

The demonstration will feature a mock preschool classroom complete with Learning Centers for participants that include math, science, reading, art, dramatic play and music.

Family Child Interaction Learning programs provide direct preschool services to families on an average of 3 hours per day, 3 days a week. These programs prepare children for school success and support families by equipping parents and caregivers with the knowledge they need to ensure school readiness. The activities and experiences parents and children have in the program are transferred and practiced at home. These programs believe that the family involvement process begins before a child is born, and support the family in their role as the child’s first teacher.
