Ka Hana No`eau announces an upcoming event that is happening
at the Kohala Intergenerational Center in North Kohala on February 6, 2010 from
10:00 to 3:00 p.m. The event entitled,
“Ka Ulu Ana: Securing our Future,” is a
food resilience project featuring a chicken cooking challenge: The Chicken
Wok-out and the Best Salad Contest.
Chickens and salad greens were raised by Ka Hana No`eau students as part
of the Animal Husbandry and Sustainable gardening mentorship programs. The Chicken Wok-out will feature five
teams. Participants include Mayor Billy
Kenoi, Senator Russell Kokubon, Senator Dwight Takamine, Representative Jerry
Chang, Representative Clift Tsuji, Councilman Dennis Onishi, David Shiigi,
David Fuertes, Chef Alan Awana, and Kaleo Iwasaki. The program is seeking individuals with the
best salad dressing in town for the dressing contest.
Other activities happening during the day include Agricultural demonstrations and displays including saddle-making, Taro farming, Natural farming Practices, USDA, University of Hawaii, and the U.S. Census Bureau. Entertainment will also be happening throughout the event.
A $5.00 donation will cover admission to the event, participation in workshops and displays, taste testing privileges, and a free bowl of chili and rice. The event is sponsored in partnership with Partners In Development, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and the 21st Century Learning Center Grant.
