The Extraordinary Ordinary
It is interesting to note that our busy lives are predominantly populated by mundane, ordinary, usual, and expected events and happenings most of which we barely notice and, usually, mechanically endure. From time to time, however, we are blessed with the ordinary that, upon reflection, turns into something unique and becomes, as we say in the local Hawaiian vernacular, a “chicken skin” event. Such was the case a couple of weeks ago when a simple exchange of draft work product from the editor to the publisher took place. On the surface it was simply another step in what has turned out to be a very long process of editing. Upon reflection, however, it began to dawn on me that it was a tremendous milestone in the life of our Hawaiian community.
What was handed to the publisher was the first draft of the new diacritically marked Ka Baibala Hemolele, the Hawaiian language bible. That simple act was the first of the final steps of a project that has taken ten years and millions of dollars to complete - the first edition of the Hawaiian language bible in the new orthography. It is the first of its kind and the first marked edition of the Baibala since it was completed in 1839.
As we reflected on the event we were also awed by the great opportunity the publication of this seminal cultural, linguistic and spiritual resource represents to the Hawaiian people. More and more of our community are getting comfortable with the language and for many years, the Hawaiian bible, the first work of the written language, was out of print, unavailable, and without the ‘okina and kahakō.
We are humbled by the opportunity that Partners in Development Foundation (PIDF) has had to be a part of the work Helen Kaowili and her collaborators have done over this past decade, and look forward to seeing how the many, many people over the coming generations will be blessed by Ka Baibala Hemolele.
We greatly anticipate its release this coming October of two editions:
• Ka Baibala Hemolele Pauahi Edition ~ Partners in Development Foundation in partnership with Kamehameha Schools will release a special edition of Ka Baibala Hemolele for limited time. The “Pauahi Edition” of Ka Baibala Hemolele commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the Kamehameha Schools. This edition includes introductory material relating to the life and faith of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Blue bonded leather cover with silver foil stamping on front and spine.
• Ka Baibala Hemolele Church Edition ~ Also available is a special Hawaiian Church Edition which features gilded edging on each page and a bonded leather cover that has been gold foil stamped on front and spine.
