Family Education Starts Off the New Year with an Informative Training

Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana Family Education, a Partners in Development Program started off the new year hosting an informative training focused on getting children ready for elementary school. It was held on January 7 and 8, 2008 at the Queen’s Beach Restaurant at the Hawai’i Kai Golf Course.

The event was attended by PID staff from Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana, Ka Pa’alana, Tūtū and Me as well as Ofelia Carag, Principal and four of her staff from Blanche Pope Elementary School.

The presenter, Bonnie Lash-Freeman, Director of Training/Special Projects, from the National Center of Family Literacy (NCFL) in Louisville, Kentucky provided participants with valuable and practical information in two workshops: Literacy, Everywhere, All of the Time and Preschool Parent Workshops to Go. The workshops were based on research findings of the National Early Literacy Panel (NELP) and what it means to professionals in the Early Childhood field and parents of young children. Specific predictors of future school success were identified in this research. Based on participant feedback, staff came away with strategies to incorporate more literacy into the school environment as well as ways to teach parents strategies to integrate language and literacy into their children’s daily lives!

Thank you NCFL and Bonnie!
