Remember to Add Water, Sun, and Love

Pious, Jairus, Cherina, Danica, Hayley.

Water here, sunlight there, and love everywhere can make the smallest seed flourish into a beautiful flower, plant, or tree. Learning about plants, things that are produced from plants, and the cycle in which plants grow were what we learned about at Ka Pa‘alana in the month of April. Also included in the learning experience were the color of the month, ‘oma‘oma‘o (green), and the Hawaiian value of po‘okela (excellence).

A great learning experience for many of our keiki was planting marigold flowers. It was a first time experience for many of the children and through it they learned about the growth stages of a plant. Centers such as an earthworm discovery station, soil in the sensory table, plant tracing, ink tree art, and flower jumping helped to engage the keiki in activities that encouraged their growth physically and mentally.

Our families also went on a fieldtrip to Ānuenue School. The school has many native Hawaiian plants and a lo‘i taro patch. The children got down and dirty as they stepped into one of the empty patches to prepare it for planting kalo. They also experienced playing fun makahiki games.

The month was filled with lots of fun, love, and joy. These are just some of the things the keiki of Ka Pa‘alana receive when they come to preschool. Similar to plants, our children need these elements in order to flourish and grow. Overall, it was a great experience for all!

Next month, we’ll focus our attention on the little creatures out there…insects.
