Hope Preschool: Shalentina shows off our bug-ful literacy board.
Even the smallest of creatures can terrify the bravest of us. These creatures usually appear unannounced and unwanted. When they do come around at home, I bet you can hear your Tūtū (Grandmother) screaming “Hit um with your slippah!” This wasn’t the case at Ka Pa‘alana as we learned about insects. These insects became our friends and helped us learn valuable lessons throughout May. ‘Ele‘ele (black) and pa‘ahana (hard-working) were also included to help expand our knowledge.

Pai‘olu Kaiāulu Preschool: Manson, Lurline, Friajoy, Taysja, Tiare, Aunty Dolly, Honey-Honey, Honey-Girl, Uncle Jason, and Aunty Pohai watch as the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.
The learning focus of May centered on insects, their body parts, and living environment. The theme was highlighted in the discovery station as real monarch caterpillars were brought daily to preschool. This gave our keiki the opportunity to witness the life stages of an insect. They observed them eat the leaves of pua kalaunu (crown flower) and turn from caterpillar, into a chrysalis, then into a beautiful butterfly. Making bug caps and lady bugs in the art center also made it fun and exciting for everyone. The story “What is an Insect?” helped us all learn many differences among bugs.

Mā‘ili Land Preschool: Uncle Jason, Leila, Ashanti, Pious, and Jarius observe the caterpillars.
Laughs and a few scares helped make this month both exciting and shocking for all participants. These things that frighten or surprise us are most helpful in many unnoticeable ways.
Let us remember that even the smallest critters can make the time spent at Ka Pa‘alana most enjoyable and educational for all.
If you had fun learning about tiny insects, I’m sure you will be excited to learn about the big creatures called animals! Get READY because we will be going to the ZOO!!!
