Summer Bridge Program 2007 Presentations

On August 10th 2007, student participants of the Native Hawaiian Science and Engineering Mentoring Program (NHSEMP), “Summer Bridge Program” presented summary reports of their projects to faculty, staff, parents and, sponsors of the program at a forum held at the UH-Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics.
Twelve Native-Hawaiian high school students who plan to enter the UH-College of Engineering Program shared their knowledge of the area of discipline within which each worked such as, Cube Satellite Propulsion Systems and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Research. Some students discussed their internship with sponsoring organizations such as the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Swinerton Builders and, Hawaiian Dredging. There was discussion on Fishpond Restoration and, projects with mentors from Archimedes Hawai‘i and Structures Lab respectfully.
The NHSEMP Summer Bridge Program is a seven week paid summer experience for incoming Native Hawaiian UH-Manoa freshmen interested in applied sciences, civil, environmental, mechanical and/or, electrical engineering. The program addresses three areas of interest for incoming freshmen: greater preparation for college level math; financial assistance; and, comfort within a large university system.
