Tech Together staff Natalie Oana-Russo, Melanie Ramsey and Chad Durkin, reveal an exciting world of hands-on science and engineering experiments to Nanakuli Elementary F101students. Mr. Adler’s sixth grade class transformed their natural curiosity about “how things work” into scientific experimental methods. Twenty-one students conducted nearly 20 experiments emphasizing problem solving techniques to prove science concepts and standards of electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism. Popular modules were the student built projects: group circuit building, illuminated picture board, hand-built electric motor. To their amazement, students constructed a simple electric motor from raw materials that started with a simple wooden block, progressing to the final product of a moving demonstration of electromagnetism. On May 30, 2008, students, families and Principal Wendy Takahashi attended the ‘Ohana Night event featuring student projects, hands-on science experiment stations, and take-home project building stations of a flashing LED pin and a mini solar racing car. The event was a positive conclusion to the academic year.
